Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine

Kyoto, Japan

The Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine, the main structure of which was built in 1499, leads to two mountain paths made up of thousands of bright orange ‘torii’ gates placed one after another, forming tunnels that dramatically snake up the hillside. Each of the gates has been donated by a person or business in the hope of receiving good fortune.

Elsewhere in Kyoto, Nishiki food market is a five-block long covered market in the city’s downtown, lined with shops selling cooked food and raw ingredients.
