Architect: Herzog & de Meuron
Swiss architecture practice Herzog & de Meuron took a non-descript Sixties Port Authority building and turned it into an architectural gem. The creation of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall building was not without its trials and tribulations, though, going massively over budget and over time (seven years to be precise). Practice co-founder Jacques Herzog has admitted that there were times they thought the project would finish them off, but it didn’t — and it was worth the wait. Read Herbert Wright’s feature on the project, from Blueprint 350, here.
